How to Participate

Want to join us? We're here to help with all the information you will need in order to participate.

Students in public, nonpublic, home schools, or in after school programs are welcome to participate, as are students who are working independently. Students from outside the state of Iowa are welcome to participate.

Each submission is evaluated by a panel of judges at the University of Iowa. Judges will use the National Invention Convention Rubric. You will be notified if your submission qualifies to be presented at the State Invention Convention. The top winners at the State Convention will be invited to attend the National Invention Convention at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

Initial invention submissions require a $10 fee per inventor. For materials submitted after the deadline there will be a $10 late fee. Payment can be made by credit card, purchase order, or checks made out to the Belin-Blank Center.

If an invention qualifies for the State Invention Convention, there is no fee to attend. Our generous sponsors include the Iowa DNA Technologies, McKee, Vorhees and Sease, PLC., and the Belin-Blank Center.

Serve as a mentor for students advancing from the State Invention Convention for Invent Iowa to U.S. Nationals! Each mentor will review two videos where young inventors in grades kindergarten through eighth grade are explaining their invention process and their resulting prototype. As a mentor, you will view the videos through your own professional lens and provide feedback.

What is the time commitment?

Mentor training via webinar (60 minutes): A webinar will be conducted to train mentors on the responsibilities of their important role and how to use the feedback platform. This training will be required to participate in providing inventors feedback.

Online feedback (60 minutes): Mentors will be assigned two inventor submissions, with each submission taking about 30 minutes to review and provide feedback. Mentors will review inventor videos and compare inventors’ work to the official rubric in order to generate effective feedback.
